Waltham Abbey scrapper gets title fight

CROWD PLEASER: Waltham Abbey boxer Phil Gill (s)
WALTHAM Abbey crowd pleaser Phil Gill has got the big fight he wanted.
Manager Mickey Helliet has revealed Gill will meet Ahmet Patterson for the vacant Southern Area welterweight title on his show at the Camden Centre on Friday, July 5.
Gill admits he’s the underdog going into the biggest fight of his exciting career.
Patterson is unbeaten in 10 fights and earlier this month claimed a career-best win when he outpointed top-10 ranked Dale Miles to claim the vacant British Masters belt.
“I told Mickey I needed a big fight –and he’s come up with the goods,” said the 31-year-old.
“I couldn’t get motivated to box journeymen any more. I was willing to go on the road and turn over prospects in front of their own crowds.
“I was hoping to box at light-welterweight, but there’s not much happening for me there.
“I was hoping to get in the upcoming ‘Prizefighter’ tournament, but that didn’t happen and that gave me the hump. I definitely could have won that.
“Mickey told me about Patterson and said nobody wants to fight him, but I can’t see why. He’s flashy, but there are definitely ways to beat him.
“I know it’s a risk and I’m definitely the underdog. That suits me. There’s no pressure on me.”
Patterson was a good amateur – he won national honours, boxed for England – and has taken a hit-and-move style into the professional ranks.
That’s how he beat Miles and Gill said: “We are working on a game plan in the gym. I’m going to do the opposite of what he expects me to do.
“When I’m in the gym, we never work on me coming forward because that’s what I do. I know I can come forward and walk through people’s punches, but I won’t get far just doing that.
“I don’t want to give my game plan away, but I’m going to frustrate him, make him miss and give him something to think about. It’s going to be an interesting fight.”
Tickets for the show are available from 07817 594053.
