Make or break fight for Upshire scrapper Gill

18 August 2013

UPSHIRE boxer Phil Gill is hoping to bounce back after his latest defeat as he lines up against Floyd Moore in a clash for the Masters light-welterweight title in Fareham on September 21.
A match between them was mooted last year, but Gill couldn't make the weight.
He still went to the show at the Camden Centre and took some stick from Moore's fans.
"I gave his fans some stick, they gave me some back," said Gill. "It was good banter and there will be a great atmosphere when we fight."
Moore will have home advantage in the 10-round fight - and Gill should also take plenty of support from Upshire and Waltham Abbey.
Gill knows all about Moore and says he has to be switched on against a never-say-die scrapper with knockout power.
"It's a risky fight," admitted the 31-year-old. "Floyd can really whack.
"He has been flattening people with one punch - and you can never write him off.
"I have seen fights where it looked like Floyd had no chance of winning, then he's found a punch from nowhere and won.
"I have the ability to beat him as long as I keep concentrating and don't get caught.
"I will be in great shape and we are putting a game plan together."
Gill says he will be using his skills to win another belt having previously won the International Masters lightweight title.
"I didn't use to mind taking one to land one," he said, "but I've been working on my boxing.
"People think I'm always crash, bang, wallop and that's how I like to fight.
"But I've calmed down a bit now."
Gill showed there's more to his boxing than simply all-out aggression when he met Ahmet Patterson for the vacant Southern Area welterweight title in June.
"I didn't take a forward step when I boxed Patterson," said Gill, who was retired by his corner after six rounds.
"The plan was to box on the back foot, frustrate him, make him miss and tire him out, then come on in the second half of the fight.
"But I didn't have the fitness to carry out the game plan because I only had three weeks' notice."
“This fight with Floyd Moore will be ‘make or break’ for me, I’ve got to get it right on the night."
Tickets for the show are available from 07817-594053.
